A British businessman and his heavily pregnant wife were subjected to a violent hammer attack and death threats during a terrifying cryptocurrency robbery at their Solihull home.

In statements to the BBC, the couple—who chose to remain anonymous—described the incident as “horrific” and noted it left them terrified for the survival of their unborn child.

Authorities are actively investigating the event, which occurred at the victims’ Solihull residence in December of last year. Additionally, Crimestoppers has put forward a £10,000 reward for details that help identify those accountable.
Investigators view the assault as a “wrench attack”—an increasingly prevalent method of physical intimidation aimed at cryptocurrency owners, where bad actors directly target investors to compel the surrender of digital holdings.

Identified by the pseudonym James in BBC coverage, the husband recounted that three masked individuals breached his home and inflicted a 45-minute beating.
“The door gets pushed open, I can see gloves coming in, balaclavas,” he recalled. James tried to defend himself, but the intruders repeatedly battered his face, head, and ribs using hammers.
Meanwhile, one assailant pinned his wife—who was seven months pregnant at the time—onto the sofa. “He’s got a pillow over her face,” James stated. “He’s literally suffocating her on the sofa. I can hear her screaming, ‘I can’t breathe’.”
Initially, the victims remained unaware of what the perpetrators wanted until one demanded James unlock and hand over his phone.
According to James, the home invaders clearly knew he owned cryptocurrency but lacked knowledge on accessing the funds. To solve this, they relied on instructions provided by another party via a live video call.
“I can hear the guy on FaceTime saying: ‘Show me everything on his phone. Show me what apps he’s got’,” James explained. Eventually, the remote caller spotted a crypto wallet holding a large sum.
The danger escalated quickly when the criminals threatened to stab the wife and murder their unborn child unless James completed a cryptocurrency transfer.
“He was basically saying: ‘Look, if you don’t send us this money now, we’re going to stab your wife in the stomach and kill your baby. We’re going to kill your wife’,” James noted.

Hundreds of Thousands in Crypto Stolen from Terrified Couple
Ultimately, James transferred his digital savings—valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds—to an address managed by the remote coordinator.
Before escaping in a vehicle driven by an accomplice, the thieves also looted several luxury Rolex watches. James overheard the video-call director tell the attackers, “You can have 10 grand each but I am taking the rest.”
His wife, in her early thirties and expecting their third child, shared that she believed James had been murdered after finding him motionless on the floor.
“It was terrifying,” she said. Fortunately, the baby survived the traumatic event and was born later at full term.

This event underscores the escalating physical security dangers confronting digital asset owners as cryptocurrencies rise in value.
Instances of crypto robberies and related physical coercion have surfaced across the UK, France, and the US as bad actors home in on investors suspected of holding substantial wealth.
Unlike standard bank transactions, cryptocurrency transfers are notoriously difficult to reverse once funds reach a perpetrator’s wallet. Depending on the digital asset and specific details, recovering stolen funds can present major obstacles.
Home security cameras captured the Solihull break-in, and police investigations remain active.
