Retail Bitcoin Holders Are Sending Coins to Binance at a Six-Month High While Whales Pull Back: Who Is Right About $80,000?

Small-scale Bitcoin owners are transferring coins onto Binance at their highest rate in six months, whereas whale deposits have decreased by one-third since late August, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost on Monday, October 26. This divergence occurs as BTC struggles to maintain the $80,000 threshold ahead of the Federal Reserve’s decision on Wednesday. It stands out as a critical on-chain development this week, with the two investor cohorts interpreting the identical market dip in fundamentally different ways.

The price of Bitcoin hovers near $80,450, remaining unchanged over the past 24 hours while recording a 3% decline over the week. This raises questions about current retail and whale behavior, as well as the price markers determining the upcoming market direction.

Bitcoin News: Why Are Retail and Whales Splitting?

This division stems from their contrasting reactions to the downward correction from $87,000. Data tracked by CryptoQuant measures the 30-day volume of Bitcoin sent to Binance by each demographic. Retail inflows have grown consistently since April, reaching roughly $11 billion—a six-month peak. Conversely, whale inflows traveled in the opposite direction, descending from a late August peak of about $6 billion to approximately $4 billion.

The significance of these movements lies in the typical motivations for sending coins to exchanges: either for liquidation or active trading. Elevated retail deposits point to anxiety among smaller participants or an attempt to capitalize on market volatility. Meanwhile, declining whale deposits indicate that major investors are hesitant to sell off during the current pullback.

This pattern mirrors last week’s market conditions, when data from CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju revealed that retail traders had largely abandoned Bitcoin futures. They are now appearing in spot markets instead. Smaller investors appear to have traded leveraged positions for direct coin ownership on exchanges, with a portion seemingly prepared to liquidate.

Are Traders Still Betting on Higher Prices?

Market participation in higher valuations persists despite the market flush on Saturday. Approximately $820 million in digital asset positions—predominantly long trades—were liquidated when BTC touched $79,221, yet funding rates maintained positive territory. During Monday morning trading, longs compensated shorts roughly 0.01% every eight hours on OKX, while Hyperliquid recorded lower but still positive funding rates.

Consequently, market sentiment has not flipped to a bearish outlook. Leverage continues to lean toward long positions, a dynamic capable of sparking a swift recovery or triggering another liquidation wave should the $79,000 level break.

Furthermore, not every large short position signals a bearish wager against Bitcoin. Lookonchain highlighted $1.29 billion in short positions managed by Abraxas Capital on Hyperliquid, which function as risk hedges against the fund’s spot reserves rather than directional bets.

On-chain support levels are positioned below current pricing but are trending upward. TraderGemini, a CryptoQuant analyst, highlighted that the trader realized price—representing the average acquisition cost for coins held by active market participants—has resumed its upward trajectory. The analyst noted that throughout historical bull markets, this metric frequently serves as a support floor during BTC corrections.

This dynamic carries weight because an increasing cost basis for active traders pushes the market’s support level higher, even as the spot price trends downward. Pullbacks toward this baseline have historically attracted buyers unwilling to sell below their break-even point.

BTC USD Price Analysis: Which Levels Matter?

BTC closed Sunday beneath its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) of $80,812 for the first time since mid-August, making a recovery above this threshold the primary objective for buyers.

Resistance lies between $81,430 and $81,850, where the 4-hour 50 and 200 EMAs converge, while $82,850 has thwarted every attempted recovery since Thursday. On the downside, the region between $79,221 and $79,369 serves as the immediate floor, defined by the lows recorded on Saturday and Monday.

A daily candle close beneath this range would direct attention toward the 200-day EMA situated near $76,350.

At present, large holders remain sidelined while retail participants actively shuffle coins. This strategic split represents the primary Bitcoin news narrative heading into the Federal Reserve announcement. Historical cycles indicate that whale positioning has typically proven correct.
